Chief's BULLog: One for the Ages… and the Record Books!

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Since I update my BULLog less frequently this season, I tend to accumulate notes in between publications. Looking at this last batch of accumulated notes after the RBN-LAG shootout this past weekend, I can only chuckle, as it begins with my disgust and lament over the last RBN-CHV match and the attitude reflected in some of the RBN post-match quotes, which took a while to get posted…and for probably good reason. At the present time, I am still reeling, or should I say, “surrealing” over what I think was one of the pivotal matches in MLS and Tri-State soccer history.

For those who were able to witness in person the quintessential clash between two MLS charter clubs, representing two of the most vital markets in which MLS currently has a presence, you were part of unprecedented history. Reminiscent of the September 17th, 2005 match with the New England Revolution which drew a solid crowd of 17,000+ nearly 50,000 MORE FANS in Giants Stadium enjoyed the spectacular performances of several marquee MLS talents, including, of course, the indomitable David Beckham, who played a memorable and productive match in his first full 90 in MLS play.  However, it was Tri-State soccer legend, Clint Mathis, and “legend-to-be,” Jozy Altidore, and Colombian marksman, Juan Pablo Angel, who stole the Mr. Beckham’s thunder (at least some it). Cletus scored his 45th goal, establishing himself as the all-time leading goal scorer for New York, surpassing the long-standing record set by MetroStars legend, Giovanni Savarese.

Earlier in the week, Jozy and Juan Pablo conducted a youth soccer clinic in New York City. I hope the youths in attendance at this clinic were paying attention, because during this match against the Galaxy, Angel and Altidore practiced what they preach, giving a clinic on finishing; a match tactic that has often eluded the New Jersey-based franchise. Juan Pablo, Jozy, and Clint are 1, 2, and 3, respectively; in goal-scoring for the Red Bulls, and Juan Pablo is in serious contention for the Budweiser Golden Boot award, if he keeps his current form up. Even with KC’s Eddie Johnson in form, only DC United’s Emilio stands in his way.

These incredible individual performances of veterans and upstarts remind us of the potential of this team and the league, compelling us to look ahead from the “Beckham Era” of Major League Soccer, while respecting our league’s past. Indeed, the future is bright for the league, with more expansion teams planned and the revival of former franchises. Whether you realize it or not, the quality and excitement of MLS is improving with every season. Complemented by other opportunities to earn club hardware outside of MLS (e.g., US Open Cup, SuperLiga), it is only getting better.

For example, if you have been following SuperLiga 2007, three of the four semifinalists were MLS teams. However, no offense to the Dynamo, I am glad it will be a MEX-MLS final. The Dynamo did turn in an inspiring performance playing with 10 men for ~ 80 minutes of regulation time.Personally, I have really enjoyed following SuperLiga, but my one recommendation would be to offer an English broadcast.

Telefutura is not always accessible and still has a lot to learn about camera coverage, too. I love the passionate inflections of the commentators, regardless of what they are saying or not saying, but there is no need to cut to fans in the stands or match statistics while the game is going on, or before a set piece or card is displayed or importantly before a goal is scored! SHEESH!!! My idea would be to have ESPN (Sorry, FSC, but I love the new aerial camera angles they offer now) do the camera work with Hispanic commentators and English closed-caption. What do you think?

Honestly, I appreciate the European club action, but I have enjoyed being fan of MLS and the “RedMetroBullStars” more since 2001. Yeah, I was a late bloomer, but 2001 was when I first arrived in New Jersey. Honestly, my first purchase was MetroStars season tickets, and I have never regretted the expense…win, lose, or draw. If last weekend’s epic clash did not give you goosebumps and at least get you thinking about buying season tickets to the Red Bulls or your favorite MLS team, then you are either not of this world or clinically dead.  With players more accessible and humble as ever, these are truly the glory days of MLS.

Speaking of humility, I am awestruck by the professionalism, mutual respect, and composure that Beckham displays on and off the field. In some ways, it is atypical behavior of him, but I really get the sense that he is having a blast here in MLS. Come to think of it, would you not feel the same way as an internationally recognized set-piece specialist, when Kevin Stott awards you limitless opportunities to strut your stuff? Give me a break, Stott! How much did David pay you?

Notwithstanding disagreements with the officiating team, which is part of any sport, the fans were certainly watching Beckham. I know that most of the 66,000+ folks came to see him, but I hope that we do not forget the world-class talent we have bred in our own ranks here in America. This is the truth!

Long after “BeckhaMania,” we will rely on our American-bred talent pool to advance the MLS brand of soccer on the international stage. Let us not forget that young Jozy turns just 18 this November. I would be sad to see Jozy and others go across the pond, but it would not surprise me. While it hurts MLS a little, it helps US Soccer, the greater cause. Speaking of which, before South Africa 2010, I would be remiss to ignore the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup THIS YEAR in China. Our talented ladies have a say, too, and you can see their schedule on our RBN calendar.

Chief’s Props:

To Mr. Beckham: You politely “shushed” the home crowd after serving up Pavon’s first goal, drawing with the Red Bulls at 1-1. I believe RagingBullNation needs to return the favor… :-) Aside from that, thanks for your acknowledgement of all American soccer fans and all you have already done for MLS in such a short time. I sincerely wish you and your family all the best here in our league and our country. Anyone who does not agree with these sentiments should seriously reconsider their opinions.

Chief’s Yellow Card:

To Mr. Pavon: If Stott were doing his job, I would not have had to write this part: Indeed, you had a breakout performance that night, thanks to some premium services from a more well-known teammate. However, you have the dubious distinction of receiving the first RBN Yellow Card ever issued for the Landon-esque “cutthroat” gesture after your second goal. You see, you underestimated your opponent, which suggests you are not ready for MLS. In the end, your effort was notenough, and it was the Galaxy’s collective head that got lopped off. If you think two goals in one game all season is going to keep you on any MLS roster, good luck . . . especially breaking the 30-point barrier this season.

For the love of The Beautiful Game, BE A GOOD CITIZEN, AND GET IN IT! There is no better time, place, or sport.

YIRB
Chief
