Chief's BULLog: A New Era Begins . . .
Wednesday, March 7th, 2007To be honest, I always contemplated the day that I would no longer be officially “The Chief,” and how I would react. While my RagingBullNation (RBN) compatriots affirm that “There is only ONE ‘Chief Toro!’” I always knew that one day I would need to abdicate; if not for personal or logistic reasons, but more importantly, for the benefit of RBN. I truly believe that inspiring others to take initiative, combined with the infusion of fresh ideas and approaches is the best and only way “The Nation” will survive the challenges and opportunities ahead.
With a panoramic view of the Red Bull Park construction site as a backdrop, RBN celebrated its second birthday with the induction of its first elected Executive Director, AJ Kelton (affectionately dubbed “The 5th Official” or “T5O”). Thus, a new era was ushered in, with new Nationals to follow; not unlike a new era for New York Red Bulls soccer will be ushered in at Harrison, NJ. As we move forward, I am flattered that our new Executive Director has chosen to continue the Chief’s “BULLog” as a regular article on www.RagingBullNation.net. I aim not to disappoint, but enlighten and entertain.
The notion of an RBN family is now crystallized in my mind. When we started out as MetroNation, none of the Charter Citizens had any clue of what to expect or how to proceed. Not long after breathing a sigh of relief and celebrating the achievements of our first season together as a supporters club; we were again confronted with uncertainty.
Enter, Red Bull . . .
What a @#$!!$@*!! headache that turned out to be for our young supporters club! While we were excited about the prospects of new ownership, by a progressive and very successful global company, we were unsure about how to interact with, or what to expect from, the new faces, names, and corporate culture.
The question became, how do we demonstrate our solidarity with Red Bull New York with a name like, “MetroNation,” and bleeding Red and Black? I think we bled mostly red, especially after the disappointing conclusion of the 2005 MetroStars season . . . ahem . . . In March 2006, as the revolving door continued to spin at the “RedMetroBullStars Front Office” (now known as the Red Bull Front Office or RBFO), we successfully managed this uncertainty with unity of Purpose, clarity of Vision and conviction of Mission.
After many rounds of voting, teleconferences, e-mails, and impassioned debates, we reintroduced ourselves as RagingBullNation, with some healthy controversy, thanks mostly to BigSoccer subscribers. : Nonetheless, we stayed the course, and celebrated yet another successful season, with undoubtedly more ahead . . . Yet, we still await an MLS Cup in the Red Bull trophy cabinet . . .
Now, as I assume a more subtle role with RBN as one of the Trustees, I have had more time to reflect on the events of these past two seasons, which kindle the spirit of my message to you, the reader. I can honestly say that I have no regrets. I would not have changed anything. We are fortunate to be able to have so many dedicated and capable Nationals who are willing to do what it takes to nurture our supporters club. RBN is fiscally viable, and in good standing with the players, coaches, staff, and surrounding community. We hope to build upon this together.
We are also poised to evolve into what will surely be a unique supporters club throughout all of MLS. It has been a privilege to have been entrusted with such great responsibility, and a pleasure to have engaged all of you in seeing these responsibilities through. As “Chief Toro,” it was often implied that I did this and that, but I argue differently. WE did this and that . . .
Let us all look forward to this season; under dedicated and capable new leadership, and an outstanding and inspiring “supporting cast.” Many other Nationals are rallying behind our new leader, which truly warms my heart. With a New York Red Bulls (NYRB) coaching staff and player roster that promises excitement and controversy, I am enthusiastic about the bright future ahead for RBN and NYRB.
I symbolically trade my Golden Horns for a pair of lesser sheen, but not lesser importance. Each of us in RBN plays an important role in contributing to our collective success. Whether you are an “official supporter” or not; or “old school” vs. “progressive;” the success of MLS is entrusted with fans and enthusiasts like us. Acting upon this belief will be the cornerstone of building a stronger fan base for today and tomorrow.
Good luck and Godspeed to all . . . but never goodbye. It might be Chief Illiniwek’s “swan song,” but I hope my passion and pride for Red Bull soccer continues to thrive in each one of you. Conversely, thanks to you all for making me a better person and National.
As for my aforementioned reaction? Three words: Contentment, Pride, and Anticipation.
Sincerely Yours in the Raging Bull,
Marc P Bernarducci
